Career Day Draws Seventy-five Students

By Sanjay Paranandi

Seventy-five New York City high school students participated in an annual career day sponsored by the NYSSCPA Recruitment for CPA Careers Committee on April 30. Presenters explained the diverse fields available in the accounting profession, how they first became interested in accounting, and how they reached their goals.

Speakers included Recruitment for CPA Careers Committee Chair Don A. Kiamie and members Kathleen G. Brown, Barbara Ann O'Connell, Al Tretola, and Marc D. Zand. Lisa Edelstien, human resources director of David Berdon and Co., and Michael Gaines, human resources director of Friedman Alpren & Green, also spoke at the event. The speakers answered many questions from curious students who wanted to know more about the profession.

Students from Martin Luther King High School, High School of Economics and Finance, Jamaica High School, Stevenson High School, Beach Channel High School, and Dewey High School, participated in career day.

The event received positive reviews, including these three from Martin Luther King High School students.

"It was very helpful," Calvin Persuad said. "It helps both future accountants and undecided students."

"This was a very good opportunity to enhance myself and think about my future as a businessperson," Giovanny Breton said.

"This seminar was an exceptional experience," Olhae Martinez said. "It gave me a better incentive to reach my goal of becoming a CPA."

After the presentations, students visited five firms to get a taste of what it is like in an accounting workplace. The Recruitment for CPA Careers Committee thanks Ernst & Young LLP, Friedman Alpren & Green, KPMG Peat Marwick LLP, Richard A. Eisner & Co. LLP, and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP for providing firm tours.
