New York State Association of CPA Candidates President's Message

By Ron Friedman

The past year was packed with many changes in our profession. As my term expires as president, I believe we accomplished our goal to present the most timely and relevant information to our membership. Our November Career Fair was a great success; highlights included a lively panel discussion hosted by Richard Levychin and the official introduction of the Association's website, www.cpacandidates.com. At our January meeting, NYSSCPA President George Foundotos (Suffolk) and Executive Director Louis Grumet gave a spirited presentation on the Uniform Accountancy Act. In March, AICPA Project Manager Thomas J. Lemmon (Mid Hudson) discussed the impact of the Institute's Vision Project on today's young professionals. (See related article on this page.) We have expanded our mentoring program and plan a resume book as another career development source for members.

I would like to thank all our mentors and advisors, who contributed their time to help shape the careers of future professionals; the 199899 board of directors, who successfully demonstrated what teamwork is all about; our sponsors, who helped make our events a reality; and those members who supported our programs.

Congratulations to the newly elected board of directors. You have taken on the challenge of leading the Association into the new millennium. Enjoy the ride and have fun.

Let me also congratulate those candidates who passed the May 1999 CPA examination whether in total or in part. For those whose results were not as favorable, please do not be discouraged. While passing the exam may seem like an insurmountable task, it can be done. Rededicating oneself to passing and good study habits most surely will result in a passing grade in November.

Experienced accounting practitioners have a responsibility to properly train and assist their less experienced colleagues in career development. That is what makes our profession special and what binds one generation to the next. I strongly urge everyone who is not active in the Candidates Association to become involved because you represent the future of the Association and the profession. Your affiliation will give you up-to-date information about the profession, access to our new website, and networking opportunities with accomplished CPAs. It also will help you develop characteristics sought by employers: teamwork, poise, and leadership. Be confident in knowing that you can make a difference in shaping your future, be a part of the exciting changes happening in our profession, and take charge of your careers.

Good luck to all! *
