Syracuse Young CPAs Participate in Tax Assistance Program

Members of the NYSSCPA Syracuse Chapter's Young CPAs Committee volunteered several hours each Saturday at the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in Syracuse, N.Y., this tax season. VITA is a nationwide service sponsored by the IRS in which local volunteers provide tax assistance to low-income taxpayers.

Committee members Theresa Rossiter and Michael Besaw coordinated this site for the second year. The Syracuse community has responded positively to the VITA program. Before many of the taxpayers used this service, they were unaware of various deductions and credits for which they were eligible and, as a result, did not benefit from some tax credit programs established by Congress.

Rossiter and Besaw hope to open a second VITA site in Syracuse provided enough people volunteer for the next tax season. The committee would like to thank employees of the Mundy Library in Syracuse for their assistance to the volunteers and for providing information about the program to the local community. For more information about the Syracuse Chapter's VITA activities, contact Theresa Rossiter at (315) 451-3184 or Michael Besaw at (315) 423-2206. Those who want to establish a VITA site should contact Ned Howell of the IRS Taxpayer Education Section at (716) 686-4778. *
