April 1999 Issue Society Young CPAs Featured in New Accountant A recent cover story in the national publication New Accountant included profiles of three young NYSSCPA members: Michael Minarczyk (Nassau), Michele Mark Levine, and Sean Windsor. The article described how a career in accounting can create many different opportunities, and the Society members, all in their 30s, discussed their diverse professional backgrounds in the Snapshots of Success section. Minarczyk told New Accountant that he always dreamed of becoming a professional athlete. Although he did not attain this goal, he became another professional, a CPA, and now works as controller of the New York Jets. "It's the next best thing to being a player," he said in the article. "I'm involved in the day-to-day life of the team. We're all one big team, whether we're in the accounting department or a player." Minarczyk will speak at the 1999 CPAs' Finance, Business and Technology Show & Conference at 11 a.m. on May 25. (Click on the link for more information on the show, sponsored by NYSSCPA's Foundation for Accounting Education.) New Accountant's profile of Levine describes her position at the New York City Office of Management and Budget. As supervisor of accounting services, she advises the city's administration on whether budget plans concur with established principles for proper governmental accounting, and she makes key decisions about how the city spends its money. An active NYSSCPA member, Levine serves on the Government Accounting and Auditing Committee. Windsor told New Accountant that being a CPA has helped him in many ways in his career as an investment banker with Salomon Smith Barney, including giving him a competitive edge to advance more quickly than colleagues without a strong accounting background. The Trusted Professional interviewed Windsor to learn more about his views on the value of a CPA license. "Becoming a CPA is a good foundation for learning the language of business," he said. "It shows people that you cannot just go into accounting; there are different facets of business you can explore." The New Accountant cover story was part of its special high school recruiting edition distributed to 500 high schools around the country in addition to the magazine's national circulation of over 65,000. The NYSSCPA encourages members to submit the success stories of young CPAs for profile in The Trusted Professional.
