March 1999 Issue Society Catastrophe Insurance Provides $1 Million in Benefits By Ed Parker Catastrophic injury or sickness is an unexpected but very real possibility. The NYSSCPA $1 million Catastrophe Major Medical Plan prepares members and their families for the burden of hospital, surgery, and doctor bills associated with a serious illness or injury. The plan is a Society member service that provides the supplemental coverage that may not be included in basic health insurance plans, including Medicare. With medical costs continually rising, this plan provides enough coverage to allow for the medical care of a sick or injured Society member or family member. It guarantees coverage for residents of New York regardless of age. There are no medical questions to answer or physical exams to endure. The plan also includes nursing home care and home health care benefits that are not included in many similar plans. This benefit pays up to $300 per week toward a nursing home stay beginning after 14 days of hospital confinement, and pays for up to 100 home health care visits per benefit period. Other highlights of the coverage include intensive care; oxygen; prescription drugs; surgery; ambulance service; diagnostic tests; hospice care; and psychiatric, mental, nervous, or emotional illness. A basic health insurance plan or Medicare usually pays the $25,000 deductible, eliminating any out-of-pocket expense. Once the policyholder meets the deductible for each injury or illness, the plan pays up to 100 percent of the additional eligible expenses for the three-year benefit period, with a $1 million lifetime benefit.
