New Show Offers the Latest in Accounting and TechnologyBy Tom HallCPAs can learn about up-to-date developments in accounting, tax, finance, and technology trends from leading specialists in these fields at the new 1999 CPAs' Finance, Business and Technology Show & Conference. The NYSSCPA/FAE show, to take place on May 25-27 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, also showcases the latest products from vendors in these areas. "The focus is on one stop shopping for everything," NYSSCPA Convention Manager Lisa Bittings said. "In prior years, the Society's spring and fall shows have been separated, one for accounting products and one for software. This year, it's all here. Whatever attendees need to get through the new year, they'll find it at the Javits Center this May." The show features CPE sessions on diverse topics, offered in flexible, cost-effective packages. Sessions qualify for two CPE credits and cost $35 each. Pre-registrants can sign up for a full day of CPE (four sessions, eight CPE credits) for $99 on Tuesday and Wednesday, and a half-day on Thursday (two sessions, four CPE credits) for $50. For POP Pass Holders, CPE sessions are free; however, in accordance with guidelines, no POP walk-ins will be allowed. "The CPE schedule is made up of today's hottest and most relevant topics and features only the very best speakers," Lorrie Lamazor, FAE's acting CPE director, said. "Attendees will learn how to take advantage of new developments in New York state and federal taxes from Mark Klein and Ron Hegt, respectively. Brian Caswell will examine the latest concerns regarding compilation and review engagements. Sy Goldberg will discuss IRA distributions. Allen Fetterman will analyze accounting and auditing changes affecting nonprofits. And the list of superstar speakers goes on: Stewart Buxbaum, Eric Kramer, Kevin Leifer, Lawrence Davidow, David Wasserstrum. And Eric Cohen and Peter Frank, two of the leading voices in the growing chorus of CPAs using technology to improve both their own and their clients' services, have put together a technology tract for Wednesday." Lamazor also stressed the objective nature of the sessions, which will have no product endorsements or slanted presentations. "To speak at this show, the discussion leader has to be the very best person available for the most important topics for our members," she said. Another aspect of the show expected to garner attention is the new site. "The Javits Center gives us a fresh start. It's a new space for us with a new dynamic, and it allows us to do more," Bittings said. "For instance, all the exhibits are on the same level, offering attendees more interaction with both exhibitors and other attendees. There are gathering points along the floor where attendees can get together, and extra sponsorships--popcorn, ice cream--will contribute to the networking opportunities." The 1999 CPAs' Finance, Business and Technology Show & Conference also will feature raffles and giveaways, as well as receptions and sponsorships. Watch for more information and announcements on the Society's website, www.nysscpa.org, or call FAE at (212) 719-8383 or (800) 537-3635. * |
