Candidates Career Day Looks to the Future

By David Terrell

With the theme "Opportunity 2000," the New York State Association of CPA Candidates' annual Career Day focused on the changing roles of the accounting professional and the future of the profession.

Held on November 14 at the NYSSCPA offices, the full-day event included two panels of accounting professionals who discussed their career experiences. Attendees received insight on the opportunities available with CPA certification and what they can expect in their future employment.

Both panels were moderated by Richard Levychin, CPA, managing partner at Kahn Boyd Levychin. The first group consisted of professionals outside public accounting including Dr. Myrna L. Fischman, CPA, chair of the Department of Accounting, Taxation, and Law at Long Island University's Brooklyn campus; Thomas J. Lemmon, CPA, (Mid Hudson), AICPA staff member and project manager of the CPA Vision Project; Marsha Parrish, special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigations; Jason Palmer, CPA, CFP, (Suffolk), president of Palmer Computer Services; and Dena Williams, CPA, internal audit officer for Chase Manhattan Bank.

The second panel, focusing on public practice, featured professionals with diverse backgrounds and different career levels including Michael Black, information technology consultant for Deloitte Consulting; Karen Bookchin, CPA, senior accountant with Deloitte & Touche LLP; Louis A. Pizzileo, accountant with Arthur Andersen LLP; Maria E. Stan, accountant with Prager & Fenton CPAs; and Cedric Tattnall, accountant with Ernst & Young LLP. Arelis Perez, a senior at City University of New York-Queens College and president of the college's National Association of Black Accountants' student chapter, also participated.

Career Day included three concurrent afternoon workshops designed to help develop job skills and to introduce the Candidates Association's new website, www.cpacandidates.com. Wayne Whalen, NYSSCPA electronic media manager, unveiled the new site and presented many of its resources. (See this page for a related article.) CPA Candidates Association President Ron Friedman led a job interview workshop that featured taped interview examples and tips on proper techniques. Mark Stone, CPA, (Nassau) of Margolin, Winer & Evans LLP, presented a time management session where he discussed what can be expected of a junior accountant and the judgments an individual at this level must make while handling multiple responsibilities. With the continuous changes in the accounting profession today, it is important for junior accountants and CPA candidates to understand the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

The CPA Candidates Association thanks all of the speakers for sharing their insights and experiences, and the event's vendors for their contribution to Career Day's success. *
