January 1999 Issue Society Meets with Future CPAs Promotes Candidates Association and NYSSCPA at Local Colleges By Joan Beronio In an effort to strengthen the NYSSCPA's outreach to college students, Society staff and members are more actively participating in career events at New York colleges and universities to inform accounting students about the Society and its affiliate, the New York State Association of CPA Candidates. In November, staff spoke to the accounting club at Long Island University's Brooklyn campus and attended an LIU career fair. These activities promoted the CPA Candidates Association and other Society benefits for students such as scholarships, career fairs, and the website. "The presentation reinforced what the faculty have advised about the need for students to actively participate in professional organizations such as the NYSSCPA," said Dr. Myrna Fischman, chair of LIU's Department of Accounting, Taxation, and Law. At LIU's career fair, an NYSSCPA staff member distributed materials and promoted CPA Candidates Association benefits such as professional seminars, discounts on CPA review courses, and the Association's own upcoming career fair. (See related article on this page.) Attendees asked about job and internship possibilities and stressed that they want to apply what they have learned in the classroom to field experience. Participating in the Candidates Association helps students by providing networking opportunities with CPAs and Society leaders, and the chance to be part of a professional association early in their careers. "Being at the career fair is one of the best things the Society has done, and it demonstrated that the accounting profession cares about students," Fischman said. "The Society gave attendees helpful material to assist them along their professional road. And those students looking for a challenging career were able to speak with a young Society representative with whom they could relate, which may influence them to major in accounting."
