January 1999 Issue New York State Association of CPA Candidates President's Message By Ron Friedman The past few months marked significant achievements by the CPA Candidates Association. We have successfully launched the association's website, www.cpacandidates.com, and had a record turnout at this year's Career Fair. (See related stories on page 10 and below.) We also hosted an interviewing workshop, a college mixer, and a management skills seminar. However, we must not rest on our laurels. Our goal is to continually bring to our members those events and programs that will help them develop in the accounting profession. Earlier this month, NYSSCPA President George Foundotos and Executive Director Louis Grumet presented the Uniform Accountancy Act to Candidates Association members. They explained what the act is and how it will impact candidates as the professionals of tomorrow. We will host a resume writing workshop in February, and a session on gender issues in accounting in March. Watch www.cpacandidates.com for exact dates and times for all of our events, including information on our chapters' activities. These are very interesting times for the accounting profession. The profession is making profound changes in its very structure and the way it conducts its business. One of the functions of the NYSSCPA as well as the Candidates Association is to provide information, education, representation, and opportunities for professional development to help members stay competitive in today's marketplace. Active involvement in the CPA Candidates Association is a key ingredient in one's own success. Becoming active in any one of our chapters will provide access to tools for success that may not be available elsewhere. Many of our programs are geared toward passing the CPA exam and career planning.
Becoming active in the Association also will give you frontline access to leading CPAs to keep abreast of changes occurring in the profession. You will be able to use your creativity while developing some of those characteristics sought by accomplished professionals: teamwork, poise, and leadership.
I urge all NYSSCPA members to actively encourage membership and active involvement in the CPA Candidates Association. I emphatically stress to our own members that your careers may depend on it. I look forward to meeting many of you during the coming months and encourage you to share your comments with me and other members of the board of directors at our monthly meetings. Write to us in care of Candidates Liaison Keith Francis, NYSSCPA, 530 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10036-5101, or kfrancis@luca.com. * CPA Candidates Association President Ron Friedman is a staff accountant with Matthews & Co. |
