Day One: Wednesday, May 14

8:15 a.m.–9:55 a.m.
Keynote Address: SET Tax: What Is It?
(2 CPE hours: Taxation)

The SET Tax is a single-rate tax simplification proposal that uses the broadest income base -gross income - and translates the provisions of the existing tax code into a simple, single formula. It offers transparency that none of the other plans do, allowing taxpayers to not only see what they owe, but also where the tax breaks are going. The SET Tax is a system, not a tax policy: it does not need to change anyone’s current tax bill; it only makes it easier to comply with the law and the law easier to enforce. David A. Lifson, President of the NYSSCPA and Chair of the Society’s Committee for Practical Reform of the Tax System, will outline the SET Tax and conduct a town hall meeting to answer questions. Come hear the Society’s answer to the nation’s call for fundamental tax reform.

David A. Lifson, CPA, Hays & Company LLP President, New York State Society of CPAs

10:15 a.m.–11:55 a.m.
Is Technology Sinking Your Practice?
(2 CPE hours: Specialized Knowledge and Applications)

Technology can weigh you down and sink your practice because it has changed the way in which CPAs work. Keeping your eyes on the technology horizon can be a daunting task, especially for the small business accounting firm owner. Knowing how to mix technology can benefit your small accounting practice. During this session you will learn about: the “less paper” approach – knowing what features to demand in paperless technology; remote server—easy access and protection from disasters; integration features that allow the merging of “best of breed” technologies; your own website—ways to keep bringing back surfers for content; search engine optimization—why you have to do it; and data file transfer—how to make it easy.

FIN 48
(2 CPE hours: Accounting)

FIN 48, Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes, continues to be a hot topic in view of its pending adoption by private companies. Even though privately held companies that only issue annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP will report the effects of FIN 48 on their 2007 annual financial statements in 2008, the time to plan and act is now. Further, the FASB Committee on Private Company Financial Reporting feels that many private company financial statement users, preparers, and CPA practitioners are unaware or just becoming aware of the implications of FIN 48.
