NEW
YORK, NY, MAY 6, 2008 – The Nassau Chapter of the
New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA)
will hold its 7th Annual Helen Gordon CPAs 4(a): Cause 5K Charity
Run/Walk on Friday, June 6 at Wantagh Park, Wantagh.
Proceeds from the 5K run/walk will
benefit Island Harvest, the largest hunger relief organization
in Long Island and the third-largest surplus food collection program
in the United States. Island Harvest collects surplus food from
over 600 local restaurants, caterers, farms, and other food-related
businesses and distributes it to a network of nearly 500 soup
kitchens and food pantries.
The race, which is sanctioned by
the U.S. Track and Field Association, will be officially timed
by Fit Results, Inc. Participants and spectators can enjoy refreshments,
food, music and raffle gifts. Trophies will be presented for the
top three overall male and female finishers and the top three
finishers in each age category. All children under age 13 will
receive blue ribbons.
The NYSSPCA’s Nassau Chapter
hopes to raise $20,000 for Island Harvest this year. Donors and
participants raised $8,000 for the hunger relief charity in 2007.
“We just try to give back to the community a little bit,”
said John Barone, CPA, Nassau chapter president. “I’m
sure that we’ll raise more than $10,000 this year, but a
goal of $20,000 would be nice.”
The annual race was renamed this
year in memory of Ellen Gordon, an active member of the Nassau
chapter who helped organize the first charitable run/walk event.
Gordon passed away in 2008 after battling breast cancer.
Registration
begins at 5:30 p.m. and the race begins at 7:00 p.m. Use the Wantagh
Park entrance located on Merrick Road (Parking Field #1). Registration
costs $15 before May 31 and $20 after. Contact Barone at (516)
620-8508 or Roy Massa, CPA, at (646) 435-1581 to sign up.
