NEW YORK, NY, March 31, 2008 -- The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) will present Howard D. Weiner, CPA of Old Bethpage with its Distinguished Service Award on Thursday, May 15th at the Society’s 111th Annual Election Meeting and Dinner at the New York Hilton Hotel. This award recognizes outstanding leadership services to the profession through publications, public service and other activities.

Weiner received this award for the leadership he has shown to the NYSSCPA as a member of its Board of Directors and to its Foundation of Accounting Education (FAE) as a trustee and an advocate of CPA continuing professional education (CPE) to continuously elevate professional standards for the CPA profession. He has served on the Executive Board and as president, president-elect, vice president and treasurer of its Nassau Chapter. He has also actively contributed to his community on the board of directors and as president of Long Island Cares, a non-profit serving Long Island’s poor and hungry, as a board member of the Long Island Philharmonic and as a member of the honorary board of the American Lung Association of Nassau-Suffolk where he was vice president and treasurer.

"Howard Weiner is a perfect example of what we look for in a leader of the CPA profession. He has extraordinary personal knowledge of accounting and auditing as well as current issues involving Securities and Exchange Commission accounting and disclosures with publicly-held companies using the highest quality control standards. He has served as chair of the Accounting & Auditing Services Practice Management Committee and been a member of 16 NYSSCPA and chapter committees. He has spearheaded the CPE initiative within his firm and has advocated for strong education and quality review standards in his educational lectures, FAE presentations and committee service,” Barry Seidel, CPA, a former NYSSCPA president, said in nominating Weiner for this award.

Weiner joined the NYSSCPA in 1970. He has also chaired its Accounting & Auditing Services Practice Management committee and Annual FAE conference, and been a member of its International Accounting and Auditing, Peer Review, Management of an Accounting Practice, Annual Leadership, Chapter Relations, Audit Sampling, Quality Control Practice Assistance, Analytical Techniques and Computers in Accounting and Auditing committees.

As the partner in charge of audit quality at Holtz Rubenstein Reminick LLP, he has the overall responsibility for the development of firm policies and procedures within the audit department and for the firm's educational programs. As an active member in DFK International, a worldwide association of accounting firms, he chairs its International Assurance Committee. He also has served as president and on the executive board of DFK/USA, the American arm of DFK International.

Weiner earned a B.B.A. degree in accounting and an MBA in taxation/data processing from Bernard M. Baruch College, City University of New York.
