NEW
YORK, March 17, 2009 – The New York State Society
of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) will present Thomas
Murray, CPA of Sayville with its Arthur J. Dixon Public Service
Award on May 14 at the Society’s 112th Annual Election
Meeting and Dinner at the Marriott Marquis in New York City.
The Arthur J. Dixon Public Service Award recognizes CPAs who
have distinguished themselves in community, charitable or civic
activities on an ongoing basis.
“Throughout his career, Thomas Murray has earned repeated
recognition from various organizations and his peers for his
dedication and public service activities,” according to
John Shillingsford Jr., Suffolk Chapter President-Elect. A nominating
letter from the Suffolk chapter Board of Directors cited Murray’s
special recognition from past Suffolk County Executive, Robert
Gaffney, in January 2003 for his years of service to the Long
Island Business Community.
Murray also serves on the Board of Directors
of Long Island Cares Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated
to alleviating
hunger on Long Island that provides emergency food, sponsors
programs to help families achieve self-sufficiency and educates
the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger. “He
has dedicated his personal and professional time to this organization
and continues to assist them in carrying out its mission as well
as the vision of its late founder Harry Chapin,” Shillingsford
stated.
Murray served as president of Long Island Cares from 1991 to
2001 and also served as treasurer and member of the finance committee;
he also co-founded the Long Island Cares Annual Golf Outing.
His service on the Capital Campaign Committee led to the purchase
of the Long Island Cares facility in Hauppauge. The organization
awarded him its Humanitarian Award in 2005.
In addition to his service with Long Island Cares,
he has served on the board of the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling
Museum and is
Past Chairman of the worldwide board of BKR International, an
affiliation of approximately 140 independent CPA firms located
in major cities worldwide, and has also served as Chairman of
BKR’s Americas Region.
Murray joined the NYSSCPA in 1982 and has served as Suffolk
chapter president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, a member
of the chapter executive board and chair of the real estate and
construction, and chapter relations committees.
He is a partner with Albrecht, Viggiano, Zureck & Co.
P.C. in Hauppauge.
Murray earned his BA in Accounting from Marist College.
He and his wife, Colleen, have two daughters, a son and grandson.
