NEW YORK, NY, March 9, 2007 -- Edward A. Weinstein,
CPA of New York City has been selected by the New York State Society
of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) to receive its Distinguished
Service Award. This recognizes CPAs who have been NYSSCPA leaders
and have given outstanding service to the accounting profession
through publications, public service and other activities. Weinstein
will receive the award at the organization’s Annual Dinner
in May.
Weinstein, president of the NYSSCPA from 1980-81, joined its membership
in 1962. He has served as a member of its Board of Directors,
a trustee of its Foundation of Accounting Education (FAE) and
as a member of its Executive, Budget Policy, Awards, Pension and
Equal Opportunity and Professional Advancement Committees. He
also received the Society’s Arthur J. Dixon Public Service
Award (1992) and its Max Block Award for the outstanding article
in The CPA Journal (1974).
In nominating Weinstein for this award, Stanley Goldstein, CPA
said, “Before he was NYSSCPA President, he chaired the Committee
on Equal Opportunity and Professional Advancement, a forerunner
of many efforts to induce minorities (then including women) into
our profession. His leadership skills, conduct of inspiring meetings
and his tenacity resulted in some reasonable improvement in the
two areas. As President, he worked diligently to raise the standards
of our profession. In a period of swirling change, he maintained
the principles which kept us all to the highest standards of our
profession.”
Goldstein also recalls Weinstein’s role as Chair of the
Crimestoppers Committee of the New York City Police Department.
“This was a fine public service in which laymen, working
with the police, would provide funds for anonymous tipsters which
helped get felons off the streets quickly. Throughout his three
year tenure, the committee functioned energetically and judiciously
to the benefit of all New York City citizens but especially those
in high crime districts.”
Weinstein was a Partner at Touche Ross & Co. and its successor,
Deloitte & Touche for thirty years. He began as an audit partner
and became managing partner of the Touche Ross Philadelphia office
(175 professionals), and then returned to New York City as a Senior
Partner. In New York City, he created and led a Target Marketing
Program for the Tri-State Region which included fourteen high
visibility non-audit companies and teams of six to twelve partners
each and seven financial service companies nationally. As a senior
partner, he was responsible for significant clients in the apparel
manufacturing, computer services, banking, higher education and
real estate industries. He also provided accounting and financial
consulting and expertise in commercial litigation and arbitration
which he continues now as a private consultant.
He taught numerous technical subjects for FAE seminars and became
an Adjunct Professor of Accounting and Auditing at New York University.
He later lectured regularly on accounting and auditing at the
Columbia University School of Business and was a Distinguished
Accounting Lecturer at the University of Alabama.
Weinstein also has been a member of the American Institute of
Certified Public Accountants and the American Apparel Manufacturers
Association.
His civic activities with 25 major organizations include work
with the New York City Policy Foundation, the 433 Sutton Corp.,
Sutton Place Synagogue, New York City School Construction Authority,
Columbia College Alumni Association, the Mayors Fund for the City
of New York, the New York City Board of Education, the Columbia
College Board of Visitors, the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of
Design, the New York City Rent Guidelines Board, Operation Independence,
Operation Exodus (United Israel Appeal) and Delta ZBT Corp.
He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Columbia College of
Columbia University and a Master of Business Administration from
the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce of the University of
Pennsylvania.
Weinstein and his wife, Sandra have two children, James and Ilene
and five grandchildren.
