Flying Into Fall

By Gail Kinsella, Syracuse Chapter President

My, how time flies! Fall is upon us. Children are back to school, and many of us are in the midst of tax deadlines. Speaking of taxes, it is not too early to think about the Annual Tax Conference, to be held Nov. 11 at the Genesee Inn and Conference Center. This year’s conference is chaired by Paula Deckman, of Testone, Marshall & Discenza, and promises to cover a variety of important issues. I encourage all members, tax specialists and auditors alike, to attend.

Moving back a bit in time, on Oct. 20, you will have the opportunity to meet with NYSSCPA leaders at the Syracuse Chapter Town Hall Meeting at noon. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. Two hours of free ethics CPE will follow the luncheon at 2 p.m.
As is the Syracuse Chapter tradition, we had a busy summer with our ever- successful golf outing (many thanks again to Madelyn Hornstein).

I had the opportunity to attend the 2005 NYSSCPA Leadership Conference. What was the topic on everyone’s lips? President Steve Langowski aptly noted that the process of reform is a high-maintenance one. This is indeed true. Senator Brodsky also spoke to this year’s leadership conference attendees on reform, in particular with regard to peer review.

As you know, the School District Reform bill passed. In addition, the Senate passed, for the third year, a bill, which the Society supports, regarding accountancy reform. The Assembly bill indicated some differing views. Be sure to stay tuned. I encourage each of you to stay abreast of legislative developments and respond in support of our profession.

I am sure most of you are personally acquainted with one or more of our local society leadership volunteers. Please do not hesitate to contact Tom Riley (triley@tfgcpas.com), NYSSCPA president-elect, or Dave Moynihan (dmoynihan@tmdcpas.com), NYSSCPA Board, Executive Committee and PAC member, with questions or concerns about our profession or how we as individual members can share our concerns, knowledge and perspective with lawmakers and the public.

I look forward to seeing you at our chapter’s fall activities.
