Message From the President

By Thomas Boyd, Queens Chapter President

I hope you each had a pleasant and restful summer. We all need a break from the routines and pressures of our work responsibilities, and the summer months enable us to catch up and even take some much-needed time off. Although it might appear to our members that there is a lull in chapter events during this period, your chapter representatives have been using this time to plan and set up meetings for the rest of the year.

The Queens Chapter was well represented at the State Society’s Leadership Conference at Lake George in July. Some of the chapter committees have met and established an agenda. We have planned meetings from September through December of this year. Refer to the Save the Date listing on this page for some of these events.

In September, the chapter will hold a few events for members. On Sept. 14, a technical session on QuickBooks will be held at St. John’s University, at which participants will be awarded 3 CPE credits. Some of you have already registered for this event. We have tried to keep the registration fee low, and many of you have expressed your appreciation.

The Young CPAs can network and root for the Mets (even if you’re a Yankees fan) on Sept. 16 at Shea Stadium. The chapter has purchased 20 tickets, to be given to the first 20 applicants.

If you are an accounting major in college and an associate member of the NYSSCPA, you are welcome to this event and to our meetings. You can join the NYSSCPA as an associate member as long as you are in college. The annual fee is only $5. This is a great way to jump-start your professional career. As a professor at St. John’s University, I encourage all my students to join. If interested, contact Aleta Saravia at Aleta.L.Saravia@aexp.com.

The chapter’s Annual Tax Seminar will be on Oct. 21 at St. John’s University, offering 8 CPE credits to participants. Topics will include:

  •  Alternative Minimum Tax,
  •  pension plan update,
  •  federal tax update,
  • state tax update,
  •  tax planning for related party transactions,
  •  abusive tax shelters,
  •  employment taxes, and
  •  flow-through entity issues.

This conference, like last year’s, is cosponsored with the IRS, and we are now finalizing topics and speakers. We will shortly do a mailing to members.

Other planned events include a networking lunch session with the Queens Chamber of Commerce, to be held in the latter part of the year. A Career Day is planned for high school students, to be held at St. John’s University on Nov. 1. A career placement day will also be held in November. An Ethics Conference will be held Nov. 11 at the Adria Hotel and Conference Center in Bayside. In December, we will have a technical meeting on estates and trusts, pension plans and eldercare, cosponsored with Met Life Financial Services.

If you would like to join the Chapter’s Federal Tax Committee, contact Edward Torres at ET1@NYC.RR.com; to join the Real Estate Committee, contact Thomas Flanagan at tef@myaccountant.us.

I hope to see you at our upcoming events.
