Join in on Suffolk Fun

By Kenneth Cerini, Suffolk Chapter President

As I write this, it is mid-July, which means the baseball trading deadline is quickly approaching. What does that have to do with the Suffolk Chapter of the NYSSCPA, you may ask? Absolutely nothing, but I’m a baseball fan so it’s important to me.

What’s also important to me, and to the rest of our membership, is that all of our committees have met, and they have outlined some very aggressive plans for the 2005–2006 year. As always, we will have six chapter events which will be available under our annual subscription plan. We have once again frozen the price for the subscription plan at $149. We are looking to do more collaborative events with the Nassau Chapter, including additional members-in-industry events. We are also looking to potentially do some joint events with the Institute of Management Accountants. We will keep you posted on our chapter happenings through our chapter newsletter, e-mail blasts and periodic mailings. If you have not already done so, please provide the State Society with your e-mail address so you are assured of receiving updates and information in a timely manner. This is especially important right now, with so many things going on that impact our profession.

As you probably know by now, identical versions of the School Audit Bill cleared both the Assembly and Senate. This bill contains a requirement for internal audit services within school districts. In addition, the language regarding the rotation of lead and technical review partners was nixed in the final versions. The Accountancy Reform Bill has also passed in both the Assembly and Senate, but the bills do not agree on certain key provisions. I guess we’ll have to see what the fall will bring.

New accounting regulations, new auditing standards, changes in tax laws, additional regulatory requirements and other developments are making it increasingly difficult for us to stay on top of everything we need to do as professionals. That’s where the Suffolk Chapter comes in. We offer education, a network of peers with various areas of expertise that can function as a sounding board for technical questions you may have, and the ability to help shape the profession that we work in. Take some time to get involved.

On June 16, we held our Spring Young CPA Committee networking event at the Radio Grill in Nesconset. Christie Comunale and Christine Kern, the Young CPA cochairs for 2005–2006, did an amazing job getting Father Tom Hartman as the evening’s speaker. Approximately 45 participants attended the event, including many new faces, which is very encouraging for our first event of the year. In addition, approximately 300 CPAs and their families and friends watched the Ducks play on Friday, June 24. Although the Ducks lost to Somerset, everyone had a good time.

During the remainder of the summer, we will be hosting a broad spectrum of events across Suffolk County; some will be fun and some will be educational. Join us. We’d love to get to know you.
