Brooklyn Chit-chat

By Warren M. Bergstein, Brooklyn Chapter President

The summer is quiet for the chapter. After our great start, we are all busy getting the calendar settled for the rest of the year.

We will begin with an Estate Planning seminar in September, an Ethics meeting and a Joint Program with the Manhattan/Bronx Chapter in October, and a November program on dealing with the beloved Alternative Minimum Tax. On December 1, we join the Internal Revenue Service for an all day program, so save the date. Dr. Myrna Fischman, Pat Wright and Phil Wolitzer are planning that program, with representation from the IRS. Besides the educational value, the event takes on a setting of cooperation between the CPA and the service. Our chapter president-elect, Audrey Dussard, has taken on the task of assuring that all CPAs in attendance get their CPE credits.

Our other community event for the fall is the annual Breast Cancer Fundraiser Walk in Prospect Park. Pat Wright will have all the details of that soon. And our Young CPA program is also off to a fast start, led by Veronica Beltran and our chapter treasurer, Adam Hochstead. And we are gearing up to root for our Cyclones on August 18. Check with Jack Cohen to see if any tickets are still available.

Now, as for the title of my column this issue. It comes from a column written by my dad, Irving H. Bergstein. He wrote the Unipar Chit-Chat column for over 20 years, which appeared in our Knights of Pythias lodge bulletin, the “Unipar Outlook.” Unipar Lodge merged with Canarsie Lodge a few years before my parents retired to Florida. Dad passed away four years ago, but I felt his presence and encouragement as I got the New Year off to a running start. Brooklyn was his home for over 65 years. I remember how proud he was when I was installed as President of the New York Chapter of the Financial Planning Association back in 1979. He would be beaming at the sight of me carrying the torch of a chapter growing in his hometown.

Have a great summer. See you in the fall.
