Batavia CPA Awarded Community Builder’s Award

By Lois Whitehead, Public Relations Manager

Paul Battaglia, a CPA from Batavia, N.Y., has been selected as the recipient of the 2005 Community Builder’s Award, in recognition of his exemplary charitable board leadership with New York state nonprofit organizations.

Sponsored by the Council of Community Services of New York State, Inc. (CCSNYS), and the New York State Society of CPAs, the award is named for Michael H. Urbach, the former New York state tax commissioner who passed away last year. The first CPA to serve in that office, Urbach was a former partner and executive vice president with the international CPA firm of Urbach, Kahn and Werlin, P.C. He made an indelible impact on New York’s nonprofit community, serving as president of CCSNYS’ Northeastern Chapter, the Albany Jewish Community Center and St. Peter’s Hospital Associates and as a board member of the United Way of Northeastern New York and the Albany Boys and Girls Club.

“The award committee found Paul’s achievements as a CPA in charitable board leadership exemplary and in the spirit of the community work and philosophy of the late Michael Urbach. In addition, the committee feels strongly that his active leadership engagement with community-based charities in this era of increased accountability serves as an inspiration to other CPAs,” CCSNYS Executive Director Doug Sauer said

Battaglia, who was named recipient of the award last month, graduated magna cum laude from St. Bonaventure University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He began his career at the Buffalo office of the firm then known as Price Waterhouse & Company, leaving in 1980 to start his own firm in Batavia, Battaglia, Andrews & Moag, PC. The firm later merged with Freed Maxick Sach & Murphy to become Freed Maxick & Battaglia, CPAs, P.C. Battaglia is a member of the NYSSCPA’s Buffalo Chapter.

During his career, Battaglia has served as a volunteer CPA on the boards of numerous charitable organizations, nonprofit groups and community associations. Just some of these include his service as regional director for the New York State Jaycees, as board chairman of United Memorial Medical Center and Genesee Memorial Hospital, as president of the Business/Educational Alliance in Batavia, as an Executive Committee member and treasurer of the YMCA of New York state, as president of the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the Finance Committee for St. Anthony’s Parish, and as treasurer and board member of the Genesee Symphony Orchestra.

“Paul is committed to serving the youth of our community through leadership development and mentoring. He personally followed through with other board members to see that their ideas for programs were put into action,” said Barbara A. Hale, executive director of the YMCA of Genesee County, of her support for Battaglia’s nomination. “He has also has an intense and long-term commitment to the need of maintaining quality healthcare in our community.”

Battaglia will receive the award at the CCSNYS Annual Meeting on Oct. 5 at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz. The event is part of the two-day Camp Finance Conference sponsored by CCSNYS and designed as a financial accountability management conference for New York’s nonprofits. Award presenters will include Harold Mandel, CPA, CCSNYS board member and chair of the Selection Committee, and Allen Fetterman, CPA, member of the Selection Committee and chair of the NYSSCPA’s Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee.

Last year Middletown CPA Sherwood H. (Woody) Levitan became the first recipient of the Community Builder’s Award.
CCSNYS is a 501(C)(3) membership-based, mission-driven, statewide association of diverse charitable nonprofit organizations. The Council is the information and advocacy clearinghouse for the New York state nonprofit sector, providing members a strong collective voice.

In addition to this award, CCSNYS and the NYSSCPA have partnered with charitable umbrella groups to promote the involvement of CPAs in voluntary board service to charitable organizations statewide via the program CPAs on Boards.
