Public Relations Liaison

As chapters begin the new fiscal year, publicizing events and communicating with media becomes increasingly important.

That’s where a chapter’s public relations liaison comes in. Here is a peek at three liaisons and the plans they are making for their chapters.

Suffolk Chapter
Diana Aliffi,
sole practitioner, Riverhead, N.Y.

Diana says she looks forward to providing a positive image of the profession and her chapter. She is inspired by the Suffolk Chapter’s active membership and its variety of strong committees, which attract professionals with a variety of interests, from nonprofit and government accounting to technology, taxation and auditing. She is also proud of the close relationship that the Suffolk and Nassau chapters maintain, noting that they regularly share ideas, cross-market committees and events, and jointly network for mutual benefit.

Generating publicity for a firm, the accounting profession or a chapter isn’t hard, Diana says, but it does require a little effort.

“If a radio station calls you on April 15 while you are trying to get last-minute work done, and they want your opinion on taxes, stop for a moment and say something profound,” she said. “When one of us looks good, it is a reflection on the entire profession.”

Diana also recommends that all CPAs familiarize themselves with key professional issues and take an interest in Society initiatives and positions on everything from new regulations to tax reform. Developing this sort of competence will no doubt come in handy when NYSSCPA members are approached by the media.
