An Unexpected Turn By Jeffrey Schwartz, Westchester Incoming President About 10 years ago, I was playing basketball in the Town of Cortlandt “30 and Over” league with an NYSSCPA Westchester Chapter past President. His name will remain anonymous, but perhaps he remembers our conversation. At that time, I was active with the chapter’s Young CPAs Committee, and he told me that one day I would become President of the chapter. I don’t think he knew me very well at that time, but apparently he knew me better than I did. Sure, I was member of the State Society, but President? Me? I always hated politics. I love my wife and two kids, the Boston Celtics, Springsteen and the Grateful Dead (to name a few). Becoming President of your chapter may have been the last thing on my mind. But the journey began for me on June 1. I hope all of you become active in our chapter and go for a ride with us. I am very proud of our chapter. We have been led by past Presidents that have made Westchester one of the strongest chapters in the state of New York. I hope I can maintain the excellence they have put forth. But my success can be measured only by the people that serve the chapter. I am proud of our committee chairs, the board and the officers of our chapter. They are the people that do all of the work. My job is simply to oversee them—at least that’s what a former President told me. Please let me take a moment to let you know of a few events scheduled in the next few months. Of course, other events will be added, so please check the State Society Web site at www.nysscpa.org often. The Young CPAs are having a networking event on Thursday, June 9, at Sea Side Johnny’s. What could be better than to meet other professionals in a social environment? On June 20, we are having our annual golf outing at Ridgeway Country Club in White Plains. Treat yourself to a spectacular brunch, raw bar and dinner. Test your skills for a chance to win a car. Socialize with other CPAs, bankers, attorneys and other professionals. Want to be a hit with your kids? Join us at Dutchess Stadium to watch the Hudson Valley Renegades (minor league baseball) on July 23 and then enjoy the fireworks show after the game. Want to learn something? Attend one of the monthly CFO or local practitioner’s meetings. We aim to please. If you have any ideas for a seminar or any other event, let me know. I would love to hear from you. As I begin to serve my term as your President, I want to thank my partners at Blaustein, Lynne & Co., LLP, for their support. I also want to thank all of the administrative help I hope to receive. Finally, I want to thank all of you who participate in the chapter in any way, shape or form. I hope you become active in our chapter, and I hope our chapter can be of service to you. Jeffrey Schwartz can be reached at jschwartz@blausteinllp.com or 914-946-9650, Ext. 113. |
