Message From the President

By Patricia G. Wright, Brooklyn Chapter President

Greetings to the members and friends of the Brooklyn Chapter. I trust you had a great tax season, with potential for expansion in 2004.

Almost one year ago, as the new president, I welcomed you on these pages to journey with me for a year to make the Brooklyn Chapter more visible and stronger by, above all, being involved and staying involved as members who want more from our profession.

As a new chapter, we worked hard and accomplished much. We ran CPE seminars that helped to sharpen the skills of our profession, and at the same time fulfilled the requirements for our licenses.

We worked with the Internal Revenue Service and other agencies to provide seminars and workshops that enhanced our knowledge of the tax codes. Thank you again to the staff of the Brooklyn IRS for answers to questions and for jobs well done. You worked with us on an ongoing basis and at times with very little notice.

As you have read from past columns, my mission is to encourage as many New York City children to aim for excellence and to choose a career (if possible, in accounting of course!). In my tenure, I visited two Brooklyn high schools: FDR and Bushwick. I spoke to parents and students of Middle College High School at Medgar Evers College, and at churches, to ensure that students follow a career path, something that cannot be taken away from them. As a chapter, we will continue to work closely with the high schools to ensure the future of our profession and a career for our young people.

I want to personally thank Long Island University–Brooklyn Campus, its management and its staff for allowing us to use its facilities for our meetings and seminars; for partnering with the NYSSCPA in hosting the COAP program; and for expanding the program this year into a residency program, which will be held June 28 through July 2. As cochair of the Brooklyn COAP Committee, I saw the enthusiasm on the applicants’ faces during the interview process as they anticipated the week they will spend with others at LIU. Thank you to LIU’s student activity office for inviting me to speak on Debt Management; I look forward to the day when we will speak on Wealth Management.

As I pass the baton to Timothy Quinn, who is our current president-elect, I want to thank the Executive Board for working with me and for being supportive of me, especially during the times when we held seminars and workshops. As always, I will support the incoming Board to ensure that the Brooklyn Chapter continues to be a beacon in the Brooklyn community.

Thank you, NYSSCPA management and staff, for working with me, and please continue to bear with us while we grow.

Again, thank you for allowing me to serve you.
