Morrisville State College
Morrisville, New York

Editor’s Note: School Profiles is a new feature that briefly details college and university programs throughout New York state that lead to a career as a CPA. School Profiles will appear in The Trusted Professional on an intermittent basis.

Located midway between Syracuse and Utica, Morrisville State College offers two associate’s degrees in accounting. One degree prepares students to enter the work force immediately upon graduation, while the other, the associate in science (A.S.), prepares students for transfer to a four-year institution.

Students working toward an A.S. degree complete coursework at the introductory level in financial and managerial accounting. Upper-level courses include cost, individual income tax, and computerized and intermediate accounting.

Technology infuses the program. Students have access to state-of-the-art software, and laptops are integrated with every accounting course. Students improve their oral and written communication skills, too, by completing, individually and in teams, case analyses and presentations.

Each spring, students operate an income tax preparation site using computer software and electronic filing through the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Accounting students also participate in the School of Business’ Professional Showcase, during which they present their resume, goals and projects to a panel that evaluates them on their work and interview skills. Morrisville also helps students find internship opportunities.

Many graduates transfer to nearby colleges, including Le Moyne College, SUNY Oswego and SUNY Institute of Technology. Recent graduates also have secured entry-level tax positions with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP.
