Society Recognizes Members of the Media for Important Editorial Contributions

By Lois Whitehead, Public Relations Manager

The New York State Society of CPAs has named the winners of this year’s Excellence in Financial Journalism Awards.

A luncheon honoring these journalists will be held at the Yale Club on May 7. The Society would like to thank members of its Public Relations Committee and the New York Financial Writers Association who judged entries.

The following is the list of winners, with the categories noted in parentheses.

Annual Dinners

On May 13, a week after the media luncheon, the Society will hold its Annual Dinner. Harvey Goldschmid, commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission, will be the guest speaker. Members of the media are expected to attend.

Chapters should also consider asking prominent guest speakers for their own election dinners. High-profile speakers attract more media attention, which gives chapter officers and members an opportunity to meet reporters and establish a working relationship for the year ahead.

Chapters that are planning to host prominent guests for their election dinner or another event should send invitations—media advisories—to their local press. These advisories should include the main points of the event and the Society’s logo.

If you have any questions about inviting media to your election dinner, please contact the author at 212-719-8405 or lwhitehead@nysscpa.org or Sanjay Paranandi, public relations specialist, at 212-719-8365 sparanandi@nysscpa.org.

For a Job Well Done

As the Society recognizes members of the media, it would also like to thank CPAs who have served as chapter public relations liaisons during the past year.

The Society wishes to thank Patricia Wright and Mike Smith, Brooklyn Chapter; Ed Arcara, Buffalo Chapter; Peter K. Maier, Finger Lakes Chapter; Dionne Johnson, Manhattan/Bronx Chapter; Tracy Cifone, Mid-Hudson Chapter; Alan Levine, Nassau Chapter; Paula Morelli-Czupil and Beth Van Bladel, Northeast Chapter; William Dresnack, Rochester Chapter; Lenore C. Robins, Rockland Chapter; John A. Savash II, Southern Tier Chapter; Rosemarie A. Barnickel, Staten Island Chapter; Ken Cerrini, Suffolk Chapter; Michele A. Dickey, Syracuse Chapter; and Barbara Bel, Westchester Chapter.

These positions are a great way to get to know your local media. We hope more CPA members will consider working as their chapter’s public relations liaison for the coming year. If you are interested, speak to your chapter president-elect or contact the author.
