Come on Board for Finger Lakes Participation By John Savash, Finger Lakes Chapter President Many
different things are happening in the Finger Lakes Chapter,
and we’d love for you to come be a part of the action! We also need officers and committee members to help carry out a few activities during the year. This is a great opportunity for personal and professional development. Come learn the skills you’ll need as a future partner or sole practitioner! Plus, get the chance to improve your organizational, communication, coordination and management skills! Coming up on Thurs., April 28, is our annual Accounting Scholars Recognition event. We will present recognition awards to outstanding accounting students graduating from four local colleges in our communities. We will also formally elect chapter officers for the coming year. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. in Hamilton Hall at Elmira College. Currently in the works is the development of a Career Day as part of an accounting-career initiative. We will connect professionals in the accounting community with area high school students who are interested in the accounting field, to discuss career opportunities. Special thanks to Susanne Neidrich, of Mengel Metzger Barr & Co., LLP, for taking the lead on this! As far as the chapter’s recent past, we have been keeping busy. On Oct. 5, we had a visit from Society officers at La Tourelle Inn in Ithaca. Forty-two colleagues attended as Robert H. (“Bob” to us all) Colson, editor-in-chief of The CPA Journal, presented his outstanding ethics update—the best ever! Louis Grumet, executive director of the Society, updated us on key legislative issues. Thanks to Carol Miller and David Iles, of Sciarabba Walker & Co., LLP, and Peter Maier, of Kirby, Beals, Maier, CPAs, PLLC, for organizing this event. On Nov. 10, our second annual “Hockey & Networking” social event took place at First Arena in Elmira. The Elmira Jackals hosted the Motor City Mechanics in a United Hockey League game—actually a GOOD game! Many thanks to Bath National Bank and ADP for warming us up with pre-game goodies. About 30 folks attended this event, including several accounting students from an area college. Thanks to Gary Riopko, of Mengel Metzger Barr & Co., LLP, for organizing this great evening.
