Message From the President

By Pat Wright, Brooklyn Chapter President

Greetings to all members and friends of the NYSSCPA Brooklyn Chapter.

I know I have not showed up in the last few issues of The Trusted Professional, but due to personal challenges I was unable to do so. I trust that everyone had a great holiday season and that the new year promises to be a great one.

As we professionals begin a new tax season, we should be prepared for the changes of the new tax laws and be reminded that even though some of us may not be practicing auditors, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act still applies.

The Brooklyn Chapter had a very rewarding 2003. Our “Meet and Greet” for the Young and Future CPAs at the Brooklyn Marriott in November 2003 was a huge success and promises to bear fruit for the future. Thank you to all who participated, and I look forward to the next meeting, which is scheduled for after the tax season.

We apologize for the cancelled seminars in 2003, but for those of you who attended the 2004 IRS Annual Tax Seminar, it was an informative, well-organized day with great attendance. Professionals getting eight CPE credits for $99 was certainly a steal, and I hope that you will not miss the next session.

Many thanks to the IRS presenters for their hard work, dedication, great coordination and timely information. We look forward to more updates. And to the members of our chapter’s Executive Board: the day would not have happened without you.

Our new Executive Board is getting ready to take up the baton for the 2004/2005 year, with Timothy Quinn, current president-elect, at the helm. I encourage you to take the time to serve on the Board or as a committee member; after all, it is about building a strong foundation for our profession and encouraging young people to become CPAs.

Plans to build unity with the Brooklyn Public High Schools are in the works, where members of our chapter will visit schools, giving talks on the importance of making right career choices (and of course becoming a CPA is one of the best choices!). We need your support, and the children need you as role models. Please use the contact information below for more information.

Finally, have a great tax season, and please take time out to let me know what we can do for you. If we can help to make your practice and the profession a better one, please do not hesitate to call; it will be our pleasure to support you.

Remember, be a mentor to a young person, especially one who needs direction to a career path.
