| Message From the President By Thomas Boyd, Queens Chapter President The Queens Chapter’s scheduled activities in September and October included three technical sessions, on QuickBooks 2004, Professional Ethics and a Federal Tax Update. The QuickBooks workshop was well attended and participants left with a better understanding of the many features and applications of QuickBooks. The speaker was knowledgeable, and the question-and-answer period was helpful. She even stayed after the session to answer attendees’ questions. As of this writing, registration for the other two events is encouraging. Because it was such a stormy evening, I really appreciate the extra effort made by those who attended our board meeting in September. The board was encouraged that the two committees that were formed this year have become active. The Tax Committee, under the leadership of Ed Torres, has five members, has met, and will take an active part in the Chapter’s Annual Tax Conference, to be held at St. John’s University. And the Young CPA Committee, under the leadership of Aleta Saravia, has formed, has held well-attended meetings and had a social event at a Mets game. Aleta has involved the accounting students of Queens College and has been holding meetings at the College. Presently there are twelve members on the committee, mostly college students. She welcomes any college students majoring in accounting to become a student member of the NYSSCPA and join the committee. The board felt that the chapter’s focus to date has been providing convenient, affordable and informative technical meetings to our members that can help them satisfy their CPE requirements. It is also a consensus that we can act as an instrument to help our members network. To this end, the chapter has become a member of the Queens Chamber of Commerce and has planned a joint session with the Chamber on Dec. 7. The session is being presented as a holiday party and seminar and, in addition to our chapter and the Queens Chamber of Commerce, will include the Queens Bar Association. Our chapter will speak at the event. Our topic is “Tax Reduction: Tips and Techniques.” The event is mainly a networking session and includes dinner. See details on this page regarding registration. The board also felt that we need to get more members involved in chapter activities. To achieve this, we will solicit members at our meetings and also call members. If you have the desire to become professionally active in the chapter, consider joining one of our committees. If you are interested, you can contact me any time.
