| Message From the President By Barry Doll, Manhattan/Bronx Chapter President Greetings to all members and to our future members in school. This issue of The Trusted Professional is focused on the future members of our profession, you the students. Accordingly, I’ll focus my comments to you. Last evening I attended a meeting comprised of accounting professionals representing public accounting and industry, who gathered to receive training and information regarding speaking to students about careers in accounting. I was excited with the enthusiasm and passion of those present and their desire to talk about the challenges and opportunities in the profession. Let me assure you that we need you to carry on with our profession. I can think of two things to keep in mind while you’re in school. One, do the best you can in your courses, especially your accounting courses. While an A average is a strong ticket to a job, many CPAs graduated with less than an A average and have done very well. Determination and persistence count. Two, get involved with clubs and professional organizations at school. The experience helps round you out and provides the opportunity to work with and learn from others. In fact, you can get involved in the Manhattan/Bronx Chapter now by joining as a student member for only $5. Please see our website www.nysscpa.org for information. And look in this section for information about a visit to the Madame Tussaud’s Museum. I hope you can join us! I wish you well with your studies and look forward to working with you on some chapter activities! Now to our members. We need to reach out to the students, our future, in order to inform them about the opportunities in the profession, to encourage them in their studies and to help them with their plans. In short, to be there for them. Remember what it was like when you were in school! One way of reaching out is to participate in the chapter’s One-on-One Program. The program allows members to visit high schools and colleges to talk about the profession and their own experiences. I guarantee you will enjoy the experience while providing useful information to students. If you are interested, please contact Marcy Bajusz at mbajusz1@earthlink.net. Just like we do, students need mentors to help them with their plans and for encouragement with solving any problems. A mentor is someone knowledgeable about the profession, to bounce ideas off and to help steer them through the mine fields. If you would like to serve as a mentor, please let me know at hidolly97@aol.com. Finally, there is no better teacher than work experience. Nothing can replace the learning and benefits from hands-on experience. Whether it’s a part-time office job, a summer position or an internship, each provides a valuable learning experience for a student. If you are interested in participating in some kind of work-related program for students, please let me know. We have listed on this page several interesting events for November. You can register for all of these and more on our chapter website. I hope to meet you at one of these seminars. Meanwhile, please e-mail me if you have ideas or would like to talk about the chapter.
