Message From the President By Michael J. Garibaldi, Nassau Chapter President Websters Dictionary defines networking as: “v. intr. To interact or engage in informal communication with others for mutual assistance or support.” As the world becomes more complex and our issues become intertwined with those of attorneys, bankers and other professionals, it becomes necessary to provide forums whereby we can meet each other and have a fresh exchange of ideas. The Nassau Chapter has fully embraced networking, as illustrated by a number of successful events and programs. Even with the Oct. 15 tax deadline looming, we continue to provide an extraordinary number of opportunities to network among ourselves, as well as with other professionals. The October chapter meeting, organized jointly with the Suffolk Chapter and coordinated by the Cooperation with Bankers Committee, is being held at 6:00 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. We are encouraging people to bring plenty of business cards, as they are sure to meet a number of banking contacts in what promises to be a full evening of networking. For more information, please contact Mark Cirelli at 631-361-3236 or Mark_Cirelli@alumni.ey.com. As we prepare for our 2005 Annual Blood Drive, the Nassau Chapter continues in its effort to put a human face on the profession. We are hoping to increase the number of pints that the chapter donates to the New York Blood Center. All interested parties can contact Nancy Shapiro at 516-240-3347. The Nassau Chapter committees are actively bringing us a number of educational programs designed to keep members as current as possible. On Oct. 29 we will be hosting the Half-Day New York State, City and Federal Tax Update, at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale. Meeting attendees will receive 4 hours of CPE. The Fifth Annual Joint Nassau/Suffolk Chapter Accounting and Auditing Conference will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Huntington Hilton from 8:25 a.m. to 4:25 p.m. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Meeting attendees will receive 8 CPE credits. To register for these or a number of other educational seminars, you can log on to the Web site at www.nysscpa.org. A number of people have heard me say that the youth are the future of our profession. I truly believe that we must listen and appeal to the mindset of tomorrow’s CPA. By reaching out to the high schools and colleges, we can bring future generations into the fold. To facilitate this, we are encouraging each member of the chapter to become a mentor. By serving as a mentor and sharing our career experiences, we are taking stock in the future of our profession. The rewards are immeasurable, and I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to participate. To mentor a college student during the upcoming school year, please contact Gail Linder, of the Chapter’s Cooperation with Educational Institutions Committee, at 631-462-1213 or at glinder@liu.edu. As you can see, I am a big proponent of getting involved. The profession continues to change, and by getting involved we are assured of becoming part of the process that will guide us through its evolution. Michael J.
