Partner with Us: Explore How CPAs in Industry Can Find Success at NYSSCPA

[no-glossary]

The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants is committed to continually addressing the needs of CPAs in industry. The Society, its statewide technical committees, local chapters, and staff work harmoniously to further the interests of this key constituency of our membership.

The Society offers all levels of CPAs—from those recently licensed to the more seasoned practitioners—various opportunities to demonstrate their leadership skills and participate in forums in which they may share their perspectives, best practices, and networking ideas. Concurrently, our valued industry members are able to gain recognition within the profession, while providing top-rate services to their employer and sharing knowledge with their peers.

The NYSSCPA welcomes your participation in Industry Program activities, and the many benefits of being a member in industry include:

1) the opportunity to enroll in industry-specific Continuing Professional Education (CPE) events;
2) the ability to network and build leadership skills through service on a statewide technical committee or in a local chapter;
3) receiving and contributing to Society publications; and
4) taking advantage of the NYSSCPA’s member discounts program.

The 2009 New York State Accountancy Law

On January 27, 2009, Governor David A. Paterson signed into law a bill that makes sweeping regulatory changes to the accountancy profession in New York State.

The law expands the definition of public accountancy to include CPAs who provide tax, management, and financial advisory services; and CPAs working in industry, academia, and government.

All of these CPAs—who are now considered to be practicing public accountancy—, must register with the State Education Department and fulfill the prescribed CPE requirements. In addition, CPA candidates may now obtain the requisite experience for licensure under the supervision of a CPA from within their own firms.

1) Continuing Professional Education Solutions for CPAs in Industry

CPAs in Industry are dedicated to maintaining and improving their skills in order to achieve success in their areas of expertise. Industry members understand the need to remain current with the multitude of guidelines and oversight from regulatory and professional bodies, and know that these jurisdictional stakeholders can make a difference in their work and in their company’s bottom line.

The Society’s educational affiliate, the Foundation for Accounting Education (FAE), provides solutions for all of your CPE needs. FAE assembles a team of expert instructors and offers a wide array of informative courses to help CPAs in industry stay up-to-date in their areas of practice.

The knowledge base covered by CPAs in industry is broad, and FAE delivers training through conferences, seminars, and On-Site classes designed with your industry-specific needs in mind. These courses and events meet the mandatory CPE requirements of the New York State Education Department, and they can also enhance your own professional development.

We understand that the technical standards for audit, accounting, finance, tax, and other practices can change rapidly. Likewise, technological advances impact the work that you do. Accordingly, our instructors are committed to staying on top of late-breaking developments to give you a competitive edge.

Your organization can also take advantage of our On-Site Learning program, which offers the same expert instructors and coursework in the comfort and convenience of your organization’s facilities. Whether you require an intimate executive-level seminar or a more general offering, let FAE come to you for all your CPE needs.

2) Network and Build Leadership Skills

We offer CPAs in industry numerous opportunities to demonstrate leadership skills, share ideas, and network with their peers. With nearly 60 statewide technical committees and 15 local chapters across New York State, members can proactively assume significant decision-making roles and share their knowledge and skills in a group setting that can enhance their professional and personal growth. Being an active industry member can also increase the brand recognition of your organization.

Statewide Technical Committees

No matter what area of the accounting profession you specialize in, you can find it among the Society’s statewide technical committees. Committee service offers industry members the chance to expand their horizons beyond everyday work experience, and can serve as a means of acquiring additional expertise, expressing your thoughts and ideas, and having input on important issues facing the profession.

The NYSSCPA’s statewide technical committees regularly draft comment letters on crucial issues and submit them to the relevant regulatory bodies and key decision makers. On many occasions, Society comment letters to these institutions have resulted in significant improvements to the governance of our profession. You can be a part of this dynamic process by joining a committee. To view a list of previous NYSSCPA comment letters, click here.

Attend a meeting on a no-obligation basis: listen or participate in the discussion of major issues; add to and gain insight from technical discussions; and network with peers and experienced professionals. If you like what you see, join a technical committee as a permanent member, and have the committee experience make a difference in your lifelong success. For more information on our statewide technical committees, please click here.

In addition, there are opportunities to earn complimentary CPE credit by attending various committee technical sessions. To view a list of current technical sessions, click here.
