Vatican Halts PWC Audit of its Finances

Pope_Francis_in_March_2013The Vatican has abruptly stopped what was supposed to be a complete audit of its finances, according to Accountancy Age. Big Four firm PWC had been hired in December to perform the audit. Though there are no signs the firm did anything wrong, Accountancy Age said it has raised anxieties among some of the old guard Vatican members. This, in turn, has increased tensions with reformers (among them Pope Francis and Cardinal George Pell, who the Pope appointed to lead the effort) who wants the church to be more transparent with its finances. The drive to reform church finances began with a series of embarrassing scandals regarding mismanagement and abuse of Vatican funds. Cardinal Pell said he was surprised by the halt, and hopes the audit will resume once certain unnamed issues are resolved, according to Accountancy Age.
