Treasury Secretary: Hamilton Stays on $10, Jackson to be Replaced on $20

MrHamiltonThe Treasury Department announced that Alexander Hamilton will remain on the ten-dollar bill, but that Andrew Jackson will be removed from the twenty and replaced with a woman, according to CNN Money. The decision is a reversal from the Treasury's previous decision that Jackson would stay on the $20 and Hamilton would be replaced by a woman. While Hamilton will remain on the bill's face, however, the back will be changed to a mural depicting the struggles of the women's suffrage movement. This move drew criticism from Women on 20s, which advocates for putting a woman on the twenty-dollar bill, according to CNN money. They said it would be seen as a token gesture, and further it would be too small to clearly make out any individuals.

The Treasury's reversal is due to intense feedback that CNN Money said was partially fueled by the hit Broadway musical Hamilton. Fans of Broadway may remember that Andrew Jackson had a musical of his own, which ran from 2008 to 2014. It is unknown whether its success influenced the Treasury's earlier decision regarding the $20.
