Number of CPAs in the U.S.: 664,532

CrowdThe National Association of State Boards of Accountancy has, for the first time, determined just how many CPAs there are in the U.S. As of April 22, 2016 the answer is 664,532. The NASBA derived the stat from its Accountancy Licensee Database, which draws from aggregated data from 51 of the 55 CPA licensing jurisdictions showing the total number of CPAs considered active by their respective state boards. Prior to the creation of this database in 2011, the NASBA had not been able to conduct a census of this kind, as there was no way to account (no pun intended) for duplicate licencees across state lines.

If every single CPA in the U.S. decided to get together and found a city, its population would rank above El Paso, Texas (649,121 people as of the 2010 census) and below Detroit Michigan (713,777 people). It would be more than twice as large as Aurora, Colorado (325,078 people). If every single CPA in the U.S. decided, instead of a city, to form is army, it would be slightly bigger than Israel's, which has 649,500 total military personnel. If they formed a country, the Republic of CPAnia would be rather small, with about 88,000 more people than Luxembourg, population 576,200.
