An IRS employee who specialized in assisting taxpayers with identity theft problems has, herself, been arrested and charged with identity theft, according to the
Department of Justice. The employee, Nakeisha Hall, worked for the Taxpayer Advocate Service in assisting taxpayers whose identity had been stolen. At the same time, however, she is accused of accessing IRS records to lift individual taxpayers' names, birthdays, and Social Security numbers to then prepare and file fraudulent income tax returns. Refunds generated from this scheme were put onto debit cards and mailed to drop addresses that the Justice Department said she controlled, which were then picked up by three other accused accomplices. They would then either take money off the cards, or just use them directly for purchases, said the Justice Department.
