irs-small-5IRS-related prosecutions have plunged over the past few years, according to AccountingWeb. The number of IRS cases referred to federal prosecutors dropped from 13.3 per million in 2013 to 9.2 million in 2015. This could be because there are fewer people to investigate cases: the number of criminal investigators on staff shrank from 2,754 in 2010 to 2,319 in 2015. Total number of cases have also shrunk, going from 5,314 in 2013 to 3,853 in 2015.

AccountingWeb said this is largely an effect of budget cuts. With less money, the IRS has had to cut back on operations and staff. While the IRS did receive $290 million in addition funding this year, it was explicitly meant to go only towards improving phone service and stopping identity theft.
