A hardware failure on Wednesday disabled the IRS's electronic filing system only 24 days into the filing season, as well as other related systems on the service's network, according to an
IRS statement. The government said that people can still prepare and file returns as they normally would. Individual e-service providers will hold onto the returns until the IRS systems come back online. While the IRS did not get an estimated time for when service would resume, the statement said it expects some systems to be available later today. Those who have not already filed do not need to take any additional action, said the IRS. At this time the service does not anticipate any major refund disruptions.
IRS.gov is still working.
