irs-small-3The IRS audited 1.2 million individual taxpayers in 2015, or approximately 0.8 percent of all individual returns, according to the service's recently released data book. This continues a downward trend in examinations that has been going on since 2010, when the number of audited returns was a little over 1.5 million.

In the majority of these audits, the taxpayer agreed with the IRS, with only 28,000 of the 1.4 million total (corporate and individual) audits were disputed. The data book also said that the majority of the audits, 72 percent, were conducted via correspondence, versus going into the field.

The IRS data book also reported that many taxpayers should have double checked their math: it found that, in 2015, 1.7 million individual taxpayers made 2.2 million math errors on their returns.
