Clearly, our world is not the world of Game of Thrones. Absolute monarchies are rare and dragons are non-existent, while modern wonders like antibiotics, running water, and reality TV are abundant. Despite these differences, an article in the
Wall Street Journal points out that, even if your aspiration is to occupy not the Iron Throne but the C-suite, many leadership lessons from Westeros can be applied to your own quest for dominance. Principally, the article notes that there is no universal leader. Whether your leadership is based on charisma and the love of those below you, like Daenerys, or on competence and fairness, like Stannis, people need to find their own style instead of fitting themselves into someone else's. It also cautions against thinking you can avoid office politics while still advancing, using the lesson of Ned Stark as an example: you may not be interested in politics, but politics is interested in you.
The article also has a little
quiz for what Game of Thrones leadership style you have. (I drew... Jamie Lannister)
