The future of automation and accounting
    Accounting Today
Automation is transforming the accounting profession. My experience proves it. Over the past five years, I’ve gone from working as a low-paid hourly bookkeeper to billing fixed fees as high-value virtual controller — and one who does almost no data entry, by the way. We’re quickly approaching an era of “no-code accounting” — truly zero data entry. But that’s not all automation will do for us in the future.

Savino: Sessions could throw medical marijuana programs into 'disarray'
    POLITICO
State Sen. Diane Savino, the chamber's sponsor of the state's Compassionate Care Act, said Tuesday she is concerned about the new administration's impact on medical marijuana laws. "While the current president-elect, Donald Trump, has not said anything hostile about medical marijuana and, in fact, his comments have been pretty positive about medical marijuana ...his selection for Attorney General is a real concern for myself, and I know for people in the industry," Savino, a member of the Independent Democratic Conference, said during a panel discussion sponsored by the New York State Society of CPAs.

    The Path to Planning Success
    Accounting Today
Whether a CPA firm chooses to provide personal financial planning services or not, you can still help pursue the success of your clients’ financial futures. It can be as simple as paying closer attention to the details and going just a little beyond telling them what happened last year. A progressive and caring CPA should always take the opportunity to make sure that their clients are well-served across the financial spectrum. For years, many CPAs have told or alerted their clients about gaps in their personal financial lives — yet the same issues emerge year after year, with a fix still needed.

CPA Scott Adair discussed some of the considerations for people who decide to go back to work after retiring Monday on News 8 at Sunrise. "There's a lot of advice to give those people," said Adair. "One of the things is you really need to take a look at what current retirement benefits you are receiving. Take a look at what potential impact going back to work could have on income taxes, could have Social Security benefits, could have on health care, and ultimately could have on your overall financial projections as you move forward in life." Adair called Social Security benefits the hot topic.

If you want to know which pieces of President-elect Trump's tax policy will become law, just ask your Magic 8 Ball. It's got just as good a shot as anyone else at getting it right, because as we all know, what's said on the election trail often is different than the post-inaugural reality. But the GOP needs to prove that there really is strength in numbers and that the party actually can get something done, especially since the 2018 Congressional elections will come quickly and the balance of power may change.

Client satisfaction often hinges on the firm’s ability to operate and deliver tax returns efficiently, making workflow a top priority. Workflow is a firm function that needs to be continuously reviewed and improved.

The Black Friday creep that had retailers opening on the day before -- Thanksgiving -- seems to be swinging in the other direction. Already this year, dozens of retailers have announced that they will be closed on Thanksgiving. The list of chains grows daily and already includes DSW, Lowe's, Nordstrom, PetSmart and Pier 1 Imports. The backlash began in the past year or two among some consumers who objected to retailers encroaching on a day that most regard as a time to be with friends and family.

Awards Recognize the Most Powerful Women in Accounting
    CPA Practice Advisor
Women are increasingly attaining the reins of power in accounting firms, accounting for about 20 percent of firm partners. This is still not enough, according to thought leaders like Amy Vetter, CPA, who notes that women make up more than half of the overall workforce, so their representation in leadership is too low. Still, it is an improvement over a decade or two ago. In just the last couple of years, two Big Four firms have appointed female CEOs: Cathy Engelbert at Deloitte, and Lynn Doughtie at KPMG.

    Credit card pros & cons
    WROC Rochester First
CPA Kenneth Hall discussed the pros and cons of using credit cards Monday on News 8 at Sunrise. Many will use credit this time of year to supplement holiday purchases.  Hall started by addressing some of the dangers associated with credit card use.  "It's important to know when you have a credit card, that it's money that's going to come out of your pocket later when the bill comes in the mail or email," he said.  "Once you can install discipline in your spending it's good to think about a credit card, but if you can't control yourself, credit cards are a real bad thing."
