GavelFormer State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos has been sentenced to five years in prison on political corruption charges, according to the Associated Press. The sentence is less than half of the 12 years prosecutors had been seeking.

Skelos and his son had been convicted last year on bribery and extortion charges. Skelos was found guilty of having used his political position to pressure Long Island businesses into giving his son more than $300,000 in consulting work and a no-show job, said the AP.

Skelos' sentencing comes shortly after Sheldon Silver, another Albany power broker, was himself sentenced to 12 years in prison for political corruption charges of his own.
