While reaching out to people you've never met before is generally thought to be poor networking practice, there's ways you might be able to make it work, according to an article in Fast Company. The article provides some templates, but overall, if you're going to be sending an email to a stranger, keep these guidelines in mind:

* Keep it fewer than four paragraphs and be specific as to what caught your interest and what you would like to discuss with them.

* Do your homework: make sure you know their work, and explain why you want to talk to them.

* End with a question. Ask to meet in person, or at the very least schedule a phone call.
