President's Message

Helping Out High School Seniors
By Mark Warshavsky
Nassau Chapter President

A few years ago in spring, a committee of administrators, teachers, parents and students developed a program to offer alternative learning opportunities to graduating students toward the end of their senior year. Called the "Senior Experience Program," it has been matching students with internships for several years now. We work with the John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, a highly acclaimed institution with almost 100 percent of its graduating seniors going on to college. Over 100 different businesses have sponsored students as part of this program. Anyone that wants to learn more about it should contact the program coordinator, Brad Seidman, who can be e-mailed at bseidman@bellmore-merrick.k12.ny.us.

On another note, tax season is just around the corner. What better way to get the most recent changes in tax law and planning techniques then to attend the 57th Annual Full-Day Tax Conference, to be held on Saturday Dec. 5, repeated the following day, at the Marriott Hotel in Uniondale. I hope all of you will be able to attend.

One of the ways in which the NYSSCPA keeps its members up to date on current events is the hosting of a Town Hall Meeting. Each chapter hosts its own night where Society staff and officers answer questions from the membership while updating them on recent goings on within the profession. Also, there is usually an address by a relevant keynote speaker. The Nassau Chapter has the privilege of hosting the last of the 15 Town Hall Meetings, to be held on Jan. 7 2010, at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place, N.Y. Further details will follow in future issues of the Trusted Professional.

Wishing everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.

Mark Warshavsky can be contacted at mwarshavsky@gmslny.com.

Young CPA Committee

The Nassau Chapter is looking for energetic, young CPAs, newly licensed CPAs and CPA candidates (under 40 years of age) who live and/or work in Nassau County to join the chapter's Young CPA Committee.

Please contact Comittee Chairs Vik Singh at vsingh@weiserllp.com or Lawrence Rauch at lrauch@weiserllp.com if you would like to help plan or attend events geared with the young CPA in mind. By joining the committee or sending your young professional staff to join the committee, you can get involved in making sure the chapter is addressing the needs of young accounting professionals.

High School Outreach Program

The Community Affairs and Public Relations Committee is looking for volunteers to speak to high school students in Nassau County. We have sent letters to carry over forty high schools offering to make presentations to students to encourage them to seek careers as CPAs. The NYSSCPA has provided a fifteen-minute video produced by the AICPA, which depicts some of the different careers in public accounting. We would like to make the presentations in teams of two members. For more information and to join the list of potential presenters, please call John Barone at 516-620-8508.
