President's Message

News Regulations Prompt Further Education on its Impacts
By Thomas Giufre
Syracuse Chapter President

The new accounting legislation, enacted this past July, has brought about the most sweeping changes CPAs in New York State have seen in many years.

What we have seen in the Syracuse Chapter is that our members are hungry for information regarding this new legislation. The chapter recently hosted the Society's accounting legislation road show at the Embassy Suites on July 22. The event had nearly 100 members in attendance, all looking for insight into the new law.

Those in attendance were treated to an extensive presentation about the ways the new law will affect them, including a vast expansion of what does and does not count as CPA work as well as broadened professional education requirements for all who work in the profession. While there were a lot of questions, the Society staff had a lot of answers and, overall, members left the event much more educated as to the implications of these new regulations than before.

We would like to thank Lou Grumet, the executive director of the NYSSCPA, who made the trip all the way up to Syracuse to make the presentation. A very special thanks goes out to Heather Losi for chairing the event and the chapter's CPAs In Industry Committee for organizing it.

Thomas J. Giufre Jr. can be reached at tgiufre@fcc-cpa.com.

Executive Board 2010 - 2011

The Syracuse NYSSCPA chapter is accepting nominations for the chapter's executive board positions for the 2010 - 2011 Society year. There are 4 general board member positions currently open. The board term is two years beginning June 1, 2010. In order to be a member of the Syracuse chapter board you need to be a licensed CPA and a current member of the NYSSCPA. Please note, non CPA members and student members are not eligible to hold board positions.

There are at least 6 full board meetings held each year. As a member of the board the chapter will require your attendance at these meetings. Additionally, we encourage your participation in one or more annual chapter events or committee service.

We also have a need for participation in one of the following committees: Tax Committee, COAP Committee, Young CPA Committee and Members In Industry Committee.

If you are interested in being nominated for the Syracuse NYSSCPA chapter board for the 2010 - 2011 fiscal year or have a colleague that may be interested, please nominate them by contacting Heather Losi, at hlosi@landrcpas.com or Tom Giufre at tgiufre@fcc-cpa.com. All nominations should be received by February 15th, 2010.
