Staten Island Chapter

President's Message

Education Night A Great Success

By Frank J. Aquilino
Staten Island Chapter President

On Oct. 1, the Staten Island Chapter held its Annual Education Night at the Renaissance Catering Hall. The chapter invited accounting majors from Staten Island's three colleges: St. John's University, Wagner College and the College of Staten Island. The goal of this event was to inform students about the various practical aspects of the accounting profession as well as various job opportunities as CPAs progress through their careers. Students got to sit with local practitioners during the dinner to hear about their professional experiences and ask them questions on an informal basis. A representative from the Becker CPA Review Course presented the current requirements. Two other speakers addressed the students regarding how they have progressed in their accounting careers to date.

The event was a great success. Over 155 students and professionals attended. Hopefully many, if not all, of these students will become productive members of the NYSSCPA.

Of course, no event is successful without good people running it. Not enough "thank yous" can be given to the chair, Professor (and chapter President-Elect) Cynthia Scarinci from the College of Staten Island.

Frank J. Aquilino can be reached at Aquilinof@mail.montclair.edu

CPA Career Committee

Through its Promoting CPA Careers Committee, the New York State Society of CPAs reaches out to high school students throughout the state of New York, encouraging them to consider an exciting career in accounting by teaching them the ins and outs of what it really means to be a CPA.

The committee has received many invitations to participate in various Career Day programs and many special requests for members to represent their chapter at similar events.
For example, several area girl's schools have asked if women CPAs could attend their Career Day events.
No particular training is required - just bring your know-how and wealth of experience! You will be provided with handouts, background material and a video to help you with your presentation.

The host school usually provides breakfast and lunch. The entire program usually last for the entire morning. Members can also choose to participate in a one-hour segment of the total program.

Those who have gotten involved in the past have found this to be a very rewarding experience. So join today and touch the life of a future CPA!

For more information on how you can help promote our profession, please contact Rosemarie Giovinazzo-Barnickel at rgbcpa@nysscpa.org.
