Utica Chapter

President's Message

Opportunity Knocks

By Scott Hosler
Utica Chapter President

I'd like to provide a quick update on current events within the chapter.

On Aug. 24, we had a Fraud and Disaster Planning seminar prior to our annual golf outing, held at the Skenendoa Golf Club. Debbie Cutler, from Kramer Love and Cutler LLP, spoke about the current report to the nation given by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and also provided us with some interesting new analytics being developed in the fraud investigation area. Afterward, Larry Gilroy, from Gilroy Kernan and Gilroy, gave an informative presentation on disaster planning and recovery.

The annual golf outing, meanwhile, was a resounding success, thanks in no small part to the planning of Bob Ritz. The course was in great shape and the weather could not have been better. We had 10 teams participate this year and our chapter would love to see that number grow in the future. This is a very relaxed tournament, and I would encourage anyone interested to keep us in mind when planning your events for the next summer.

Meanwhile, we're currently in the planning stages for an ethics seminar in November, tentatively set for the fifth. We have also set a provisional January 20 date for our CPA, Banker and Attorney dinner. The location has yet to be determined, but we have an exciting speaker already lined up for the event.

Finally, we have been organizing a Young CPA Committee that will be holding regular meetings. Anyone interested in participating, please contact myself me or Bob Ritz, the committee chair. The group's main responsibility is connecting the area's young CPAs and getting them more involved in chapter activities, along with planning events such as our annual poker tournament. We're also working with the Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo chapters on a wine wine-tasting trip, scheduled for Oct. 17. Feel free to contact myself or Bob Ritz for more information on this event.

Scott Hosler can be reached at shosler@gzscpa.com.

Utica Chapter Seeks Career Day Volunteers

Members of the Utica Chapter are available to schools in Central New York to discuss accounting as a career. We hope to provide area schools with a contact person in the accounting profession which can benefit the students we reach, as well as our profession.

Volunteer contact people are asked to provide information about accounting careers and make short presentations to high school and college students.

Please click here if you would like to get involved with this exciting opportunity to promote our profession!

For Central New York High School Teachers Seeking School Visits By Accounting Professionals

Dear high school teachers:

Representatives from the Utica Chapter of the New York State Society of CPAs are ready and willing to talk to students from various high schools in the Central New York region about considering a career in the accounting profession.
We accomplish this by speaking to individual classes, at school assemblies, and participating in career day activities. Our presentations are sure to be well received by students and teachers alike.

If you are interested in having accounting professionals talk to your high school class about accounting careers during the 2008-2009 academic year, please e-mail your request file (click here to download form) to me, Bob Ritz, NYSSCPA Student Recruiter, at rritz@darcangelocny.com and I will make the follow up arrangements.
