President's Message

Students Activities -- a Great Way to Get More Involved in Society
By Barbara Bel
Westchester Chapter President

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and this holiday is one of my favorite times of the year. It's a time to be with family, to reflect and, of course, to feast. For us, family means not only people related by blood but friends and neighbors who join us at our table. After this hard and difficult year for so many unemployed individuals, it's a good idea to remember all the things we can be grateful for and hope for a successful and plentiful year to come.

On Nov. 17, NYSSCPA President David J. Moynihan, President-Elect Margaret Wood, Executive Director Lou Grumet, Deputy Executive Director Joanne Barry and Legislative Counsel Dennis O'Leary will come to the Westchester area for our Annual Town Hall Meeting. This is the time for us to discuss with Society leadership our concerns and interests about issues that are important to us. They will also lead a presentation on the new accountancy reform law which I encourage all of you to attend. Please feel free to also invite CPAs working in industry who may not be aware of the law's new requirements. Remember, the event is free of charge, and you will earn two CPE credits for attending. Call 212-719-8383 to register.

A wonderful way to get more involved in chapter activities is to encourage students to major in accounting. The Accounting Careers Committee visits local high schools to discuss the profession, meeting with students that are interested in what you have to say. They often have loads of questions for their CPA guests. If you're interested in helping field the next generation of CPAs, please contact Denise Stefano at denisestefano@smartpros.com.

I wish you a terrific Thanksgiving!

Young Westchester-area Professionals Gather to Network and Socialize
By Heather Oboda
Co-Chair of Westchester Young CPAs

The ominous sky began to clear the evening of June 16, 2009, bringing sunshine to the rooftop of Elements Bar in White Plains, NY where Westchester's young professionals were gathered for an evening of networking and relationship building. The gathering was to be the first of many networking collaborations between the Young CPAs of the NYSSCPA Westchester Chapter, the Young Professionals of the Westchester County Association, the region's premier business membership organization and advocacy group, and the New Lawyers of the Westchester County Bar Association.

Each of the three groups are known for having successful networking events on their own. The Young CPAs have an annual wine tasting and the WCA Young Professionals have had summer happy hours series and issue-driven forums/seminars in the past. However, the groups believed that if they came together and co-hosted some events, each would benefit from the expanded guest list and business-building efforts. One of the goals of the collaboration was to provide young professionals an arena to share ideas, grow their professional network and unite on common issues. As a result, young professionals who, in the past, have only gone to the YCPA events now know about the other two organizations and their respective events and programs as well.

Each of the organization's committee members were asked to circulate the reception, introducing themselves to new people and, at the same time, helping connect people who may have opportunities to work together in the future. Westchester certainly has many networking events (in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors) throughout the year, but this was a unique experience exclusively for young professionals.

Event guests commented on the variety of people they were able to meet while they enjoyed the views of downtown White Plains. The event was such a success the three groups have decided to hold another event at the same location July 28 and plan a third for August at a to be determined location.

The event was sponsored by Northwestern Mutual Financial Network which we would like to thank. We would also like to thank the Westchester County Association for handling the scheduling and logistics of the event.
