Roosevelt's School Superintendent Resigns
MELVILLE, N.Y.
-- Ronald Ross, the embattled Roosevelt
school superintendent, has resigned effective June 30 with one
year remaining in his contract, and a new chief executive is being
sought for New York's only state-run school district, Newsday
reported Friday.
During his nearly
three years as superintendent of Nassau County's poorest school
district, Ross turned a budget surplus into a deficit projected
at $9.5 million. But in announcing the resignation Friday, State
Education Commissioner Richard Mills focused on Ross's achievements,
such as improving student security at Roosevelt High School and
overseeing reconstruction of two elementary schools, the paper reported.
"The superintendency
is a relay, not a marathon," said Mills, who appointed Ross
to the superintendency and who has admitted that he himself should
have kept a closer eye on district finances, according to the paper.
"Mr. Ross has done his best, and I thank him for his service
to the children of Roosevelt."
