Newsday Plans to Make Amends to Advertisers

MELVILLE, N.Y. -- Attempting to make amends to advertisers stung by Newsday's circulation scandal, the newspaper announced Tuesday that it would reduce advertising rates for the next 16 months and pay rebates if its circulation falls below a guaranteed minimum, Newsday reported.

In a letter to advertisers, incoming publisher Timothy P. Knight said Newsday also would discuss settlements on a case-by-case basis for the years 2001-2004, when circulation was inflated.

Sales representatives, beginning next week, will meet with businesses that purchased ads "to discuss a resolution for the overstatement of our circulation," he said.

The lower ad rates go into effect Aug. 30 and continue through Dec. 31, 2005.
