House OKs Military Student Loan Reprieve
WASHINGTON --
Military personnel could get a reprieve from student loan payments
while they are on active duty under legislation approved Tuesday
by the House, The Associated Press reported.
The measure
gives the Education Department secretary authority to waive rules
on repaying loans to ensure that those affected by wars or national
emergencies are not put in a worse financial situation. Reservists
leaving their jobs could be relieved from making loan payments while
they are on active duty.
The bill, which
passed 421-1, also would ask colleges to provide a full refund of
tuition and fees to students whose schooling is interrupted by military
service and to make it easier for those students to reapply for
admission when they return from military duty.
“It's
important for our colleges, it's important for families, it's important
for the men and women in uniform,'' said the bill's sponsor, Rep.
John Kline, R-Minn, a freshman lawmaker who served 25 years in the
Marines.
