Hurricane Katrina Relief Information

Benevolent Fund Can Help Members Impacted by Hurricane

The New York State Society of CPAs is anxious to help member victims of Hurricane Katrina.

For nearly 50 years, the Society’s Benevolent Fund has provided voluntary financial assistance to members or former members and their families in need. If you have experienced financial loss as a result of the ravages of Hurricane Katrina, you should consider an application to the Benevolent Fund.

An award from the Benevolent Fund could add to financial aid being received from the federal government and other sources.

For more information about the fund, please contact Jim Woehlke at 1 (800) NYSSCPA (697-7272) or jwoehlke@nysscpa.org.

AICPA Offers Resources to Help Hurricane Relief Efforts

The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) has posted a Web page on AICPA.org offering CPAs and other tax professionals information on how to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

According to the Web page at http://www.aicpa.org/news/2005/katrina_relief.htm, the AICPA is “working on a coordinated response with the affected state CPA societies to see how the CPA profession can provide assistance to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.”

On the page, visitors can find updated links and phone numbers for several relief organizations that are helping the hurricane victims. The AICPA also has more disaster relief resources at http://www.aicpa.org/news/2005/disaster_recovery_resources.htm.

In addition, the AICPA said that it is utilizing its Private Companies Practice Section (PCPS), Tax, Technical and other teams to put together information for its members to learn more about how to help. The AICPA said it will be calling on state societies down the road as it identifies ways that those members can volunteer to help.

The AICPA also said that on Thursday they were to meet with the Internal Revenue Service to push for additional filing relief for affected areas, and its PCPS team is working on a comprehensive package for business recovery for firms. The ACIPA also said that it will work with its members in Business & Industry on other ways to help, and the Florida Institute of CPAs (http://www1.ficpa.org/ficpa/Home) has offered its resources for disaster recovery to supplement these efforts at http://www1.ficpa.org/{D6874E2C-4DC7-4279-BAE4-A68779F4EAC6}.

Finally, the AICPA said its Audit and Attest Standards Team on Wednesday issued a Technical Practice Aid (TPA) entitled “Consideration of Impact of Losses from Natural Disasters Occurring After Completion of Audit Field Work and Signing of the Auditor’s Report But Before Issuance of the Auditor’s Report and Related Financial Statements”. The TPA is available at http://www.aicpa.org/download/members/div/auditstd/TPA-Subsequent%20Events.pdf (Adobe Acrobat required).
